Create custom soundtracks with Lyria 3 in the Gemini app

Using text-based or image prompting, you can now generate custom 30 second soundtracks in Gemini. This new capability is powered by Lyria 3, Google’s most advanced music generation model yet.

The Gemini app facilitates new forms of musical expression by transforming prompts and images into custom soundtracks. A user might, for instance, turn a “welcome to the team” email into a track. Or, a student or educator could generate custom instrumentals for class presentations or projects. From funny jingles to lo-fi beats, just describe what you want to hear and let Gemini handle the rest.

Note: Lyria 3 music generation in Gemini is currently available globally in English, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and French for users over the age of 18.

Getting started

  • Admins: The Gemini app and related in-app tools are controlled by the Generative AI settings in the Workspace Admin console. Music generation in Gemini is subject to these existing controls. Visit the Help Center for more information on turning the Gemini app on or off.
  • End users: End users who have access to the Gemini app will receive access to Lyria 3 automatically. To get started, select “Create music” from the tools menu.

Forecast data in Connected Sheets using BigQuery ML and TimesFM

We are introducing a new capability in Connected Sheets for BigQuery that allows users to generate data forecasts directly within Google Sheets using the power of BigQuery ML (BQML) and Google’s state-of-the-art TimesFM model. Users can now predict future sales, demand volume, or other key business metrics without needing to write SQL, use Python, or customize and train their own models.

This feature is designed for simplicity and speed. TimesFM’s powerful foundation model is pre-trained on billions of data points from real-world datasets, enabling business users to generate sophisticated predictions on their data immediately without the complex, time-consuming training pipelines typically associated with machine learning.

Key features include:

  • Simple configuration: Forecasts can be created from any existing BigQuery dataset or custom query using a user-friendly configuration pane in the Sheets UIl.
  • Customizable parameters: Users can adjust forecast parameters, such as the prediction horizon for how far into the future the user wants to predict and confidence intervals, or use our default options to get started.
  • Granular analysis: The feature supports breakouts by any given data dimension, allowing users to run multiple time series forecasts simultaneously (e.g., forecasting sales broken down by region or product category).
  • Visual insights: For single time series forecasts, Sheets automatically generates a helpful chart visualizing the forecast alongside historical data.

Getting started

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.
  • End users: Create a Connected Sheet. On the Preview view, click on “Advanced Analytics” and then “Create a Forecast”.

Improvements to local administrative access controls on Windows devices

We are updating the administrative privileges setting for Windows device management to give administrators more control over how local administrative access is handled on Windows 10 and Windows 11 devices, managed by Google Endpoint Management.

This update simplifies settings and provides greater flexibility for organizations that need to preserve local admin access while managing specific users via Google Workspace. Previously, managing local administrative access used a "Replace" behavior, which removed any existing members from the local administrators group before adding the newly requested ones.

View Gemini feature usage and threshold reports in the Admin console

Today, we’re releasing new adoption and usage metrics to our Gemini reports in the Admin console. These new reports offer administrators comprehensive visibility into AI feature usage and thresholds to help them better manage their Workspace subscription and Gemini adoption. This includes usage data by features, apps, and active users.

With these new metrics, administrators can better understand how users are engaging with Gemini features across Workspace apps. Admins can use this information to make decisions on AI enablement, adoption, and productivity for their organizations. This data also offers insight into when they may need to adjust their Workspace subscriptions and plan for potential upgrades when users have reached their maximum AI usage thresholds.

Listen to audio summaries in Google Docs

Audio summaries in Google Docs, a new Gemini-powered feature that enables you to listen to a brief overview of your document, can help you get up to speed quickly and understand the most important parts of your content. For example, you can quickly catch up on notes before a meeting, or summarize a long report and get the highlights in only a few minutes.

Audio summaries provide a short verbal synopsis of the contents in your document, including multiple tabs. These summaries are typically under a few minutes long, and use a natural speaking style to help you catch up quickly and efficiently.

You can personalize your audio experience by selecting different voices like narrator, persuader, coach, and more.  Plus, you can adjust playback speeds to suit your preferences and learning style.

Control if new Meet hardware can join calls with a new on/off setting

We’re introducing a “Video calling” setting for Google Meet hardware, allowing you to turn video calling on or off for a device.

New device-level controls: On each device's settings page in the Admin console, admins will find a new Video calling setting with an ON/OFF toggle. This lets admins enable or disable a device's ability to join meetings at any time. When a newly-enrolled device has video calling turned off, it will display the device’s serial number or name and a short URL on the screen. We've also moved Calendar into its own distinct setting.

Admin console > Google Meet hardware > [Select a device] > Video calling and calendar

New default enrollment policy for secure setup: To support large-scale or third-party installations, admins can now set a Google Meet hardware customer-level setting so all newly-enrolled devices have video calling on or off. By default, devices will continue to enroll with video calling ON.

Admin console > Devices > Google Meet hardware > Settings > Service settings > New device video calling

This feature enables a two-stage process when installers provision devices in insecure environments. First, installers with only the “Enroll Google Meet hardware” privilege enroll the device with video calling turned off. Later, admins with the “Manage devices” privilege can turn on video calling when the device is in a secure environment.

Move shared content in Google Meet to a separate window with the “Open in new window” option

We’re introducing the ability for meeting participants to move screen shared content into a standalone window with the “Open in new window” option.

This update gives viewers more flexibility in how they view content during a meeting. By undocking screen shared content—whether it is a presentation, a spreadsheet, or a document—you can move it to a secondary screen or resize it independently. This makes it easier to simultaneously view the screen shared content and participants in the video meeting, helping you stay connected and collaborate more easily.

Expanding access to select Google Vids features for all users

Google Vids is designed to help users share information and tell stories through video. To help more users create professional-quality content, we are making three features in Vids available to all users, regardless of what Workspace edition they use. These features include:

  • Read-along teleprompter: Allows you to read from a script that automatically scrolls as you speak, helping you maintain eye contact with the camera and deliver a more natural performance.
  • Transcript trim: Provides a simple way to edit your video by deleting words or silences directly from the video’s transcript.
  • Styled captions: Lets you choose from a variety of visual styles to render captions directly on your video, making your content more accessible and engaging.

Previously, these features were primarily available to paid Workspace users. This change ensures that users on Workspace editions currently on a promotional period—including Business Starter, Enterprise Starter, Google for Nonprofits, Education Plus, and the Teaching and Learning add-on—will maintain access to these features even after their promotion ends in May 2026. Additionally, users on Workspace editions such as Frontline and Education Fundamentals now have access to these essential video editing features for the first time.

Google Classroom API: Student groups endpoints are now available

Last year, we announced the launch of the Google Classroom API Student Groups endpoints through the Google Workspace Developer Preview Program (DPP). Now, Student Groups endpoints are generally available, so developers no longer need to be in the Developer Preview Program (DPP) to access them.

Student Groups endpoints enable developers to manage student groups and group members on behalf of administrators and teachers. Specifically, developers can:

  • Create, modify, and delete student groups within a course
  • Add and remove members within student groups
  • Read members of student groups

With this launch, developers can programmatically read and manage student groups in Google Classroom, enabling greater integration between Google Classroom and other tools used by teachers and schools.

Prepare for the JEE Main with practice tests in Gemini

We recently launched full-length practice tests in Gemini, starting with the SAT. Today, we're expanding practice tests to support the JEE Main.

We have grounded practice tests in rigorously vetted content from leading education companies like PhysicsWallah and Careers360, to build a best in class experience for learners coming to Gemini. This helps ensure that you’re not just practicing — you’re preparing with material that more closely resembles what you’ll see on test day.

To try it out, just tell Gemini “I want to take a JEE Main mock test.”

Note: This feature is currently available in English only.

Speech translation in Google Meet now generally available for businesses

As of January 27, 2026, speech translation in Google Meet is no longer restricted to businesses in a limited alpha program; it is now available for Google Workspace customers with select plans. This feature utilizes the technology detailed in our research on real-time speech-to-speech translation to translate spoken language in near-real-time, helping global teams communicate more naturally and reducing the friction of language barriers. Speech translation is already available to users with personal accounts subscribed to Google AI plans.

This launch follows our recent announcement regarding new admin controls, ensuring organizations can configure this capability to best suit their needs.

How it works

Speech translation allows participants to speak in their native language while others hear the translation in theirs. Unlike translated captions, which only display text, speech translation preserves the flow of conversation by creating an audio translation dubbed over the original speech that mimics the speaker’s tone and speaking cadence.

Why it matters

Speech translation is designed to make meetings more inclusive and effective. By preserving the speaker's tone of voice, it makes it easier for participants to distinguish who is speaking, even in group settings. This helps maintain the emotional context and expressiveness of the conversation without the need to constantly read subtitles.

More details

  • Language support: At launch, the feature supports bidirectional translation between English and Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Italian.
  • Single language pair per meeting: Currently, only one language pair (e.g., English <-> Spanish) can be active in a meeting at a time.
  • Meeting room hardware: Users in conference rooms can hear translations but their own speech will not be translated.
  • Mobile support: Speech translation will roll out to the Meet Android and iOS apps in the coming months.
  • Ongoing improvements: In the coming months, users can expect visual updates to the user interface, as well as refinements to translation accuracy and nuance.

Limits

Workspace customers will get promotional access to higher usage limits of speech translation for at least 60 days, allowing users to experiment with these features. Per-user usage limits will apply afterward; we’ll provide more information in a future update prior to any changes.

All Google Forms will now have granular controls over who can respond

Last year, we announced that form creators can upgrade their existing forms to have granular controls over who can respond to those forms via sharing settings.  Specifically, form creators can limit response access to specific users, groups, or target audiences, similar to how file owners can restrict the sharing of Google Docs, Sheets, Slides or Sites files in Drive.

We’re excited to announce that we will now automatically upgrade all existing forms to have granular controls over who can respond. This automatic upgrade will not change who can access or respond to the form. Once the upgrade is complete, form creators can make changes to who can respond using the new granular controls, if desired. The form will remain available to receive new responses while it is being upgraded. Admins may see Drive log entries for forms we upgrade, indicating that we've changed its "publish status.”

Record audio, video, and screencasts directly in Google Classroom

Starting today, we're bringing audio, video, and screencast recording functionality to Google Classroom. This new functionality is designed to help transform teaching and learning through multimodality, improving communication, intake, and retention for learners.

Now, teachers and students (when permitted) will see a record button where they can initiate, record, and post audio, video, or screencasts without ever leaving Classroom.

This new recording feature will be available in several key areas:

  • Private comments: Teachers can provide personalized, faster, and friendlier feedback to students on their submissions. For example, teachers helping students with language acquisition can share pronunciation and fluency feedback, and educators of technical subjects can walk students through complex material line-by-line using their voice and screen.
  • Announcements and posts: Teachers can record audio and/or video announcements to improve engagement and connection with students. Students can also use this recording option for announcements if allowed by the teacher's controls.
  • Assignments: Teachers can record instructions for assignments, quiz assignments, materials, and questions, boosting clarity through multimodal instruction. This helps provide a pathway for every student to access instructions and content.
  • Submissions: Students can record and submit multimodal responses to assignments, quiz assignments, and questions. This allows students to show what they know in multiple and accessible ways, which can help close learning gaps and check student understanding in new ways.

This update integrates audio, video, and screencast recording directly into Classroom workflows.

For teachers, this feature can help solve pain points like the time-consuming task of typing up feedback and a lack of personalization in typed messages, allowing them to leave feedback that is faster and more impactful. For students, it can help improve the comprehension and digestibility of feedback and helps them feel more connected and motivated. Ultimately, audio, video, and screen recording in Classroom enhances communication for real improvements to teaching and learning.

Getting started

  • Admins: There is no admin control for this feature.
  • End users: Students must have permission to post in Google Classroom in order to use this feature for announcements and posts. Visit the Help Center to learn more. Teachers and students will be able to initiate audio, video, and screencast recording in Google Classroom on web only.

Google Calendar offers event color labels for events on your primary calendar, which help users to visually organize their meetings and categorize them with Time Insights. Currently, color labels are only visible to users who have “Make changes to events and manage sharing” permissions for a primary calendar.

Starting February 27, 2026, we are expanding this to include users who have  “Make changes to events” permissions. Currently, these users are only able to see the colors, not the labels — which made color categorizing events harder.
