Bionic Commando (バイオニックコマンドー) is a 3D action game.
Story[]
The game takes place ten years after Bionic Commando Rearmed, where Nathan "RAD" Spencer managed to defeat the Imperial Army and destroy their secret weapon, the Albatross. In the aftermath, Spencer and his comrade Joseph "Super Joe" Gibson were praised as heroes by the entire nation. TASC, the military intelligence organization that provided Spencer with his bionic arm, soon found their bionics program in great demand. Now under the command of Director Joseph Gibson, the organization flourished, and many other operatives were enhanced with bionic parts, being established as the primary forces of the FSA, with Spencer being tasked with training a new generation of "bionic commandos". At the same time, Spencer began to undertake a series of high risk, covert operations.
However, this new technology was not accepted by everyone. Pro- and anti-bionic factions arose out of this dissension, and what started as a debate over morals descended into civil unrest. Some feared that bionic technology would be the first step in a new arms race, while others feared that defenseless humans would become weak in a world filled with bionic soldiers with superhuman strength. Some citizens began to loudly call for a ban on bionic technology. They started demonstrations that soon turned into riots. At a time when tensions were rising behind the scenes, a group of bionic soldiers who had defected from TASC were arrested for supporting an uprising against the Federation. This incident prompted an investigation by presidential order. During a mission codenamed Operation Blackout, Spencer's sense of justice came into conflict with the orders from his superior and friend Gibson. In refusing to kill two rogue bionic prototypes, Spencer disobeyed a direct order, ultimately leading to the deaths of several TASC agents. Spencer, who was considered a hero and had a statue of him displayed in the Avenue of Heroes, a street lined with statues of those who had played an active role in the war against the Imperial Army, was framed for involvement in the incident and court-martialed. He was immediately arrested, his bionic arm was taken away, and he was found guilty. Although Spencer maintained his innocence, his desperate pleas were in vain, and he was sentenced to death for treason in a military trial.
The government's true intention was to eradicate bionic technology in order to calm the public, starting with Spencer's execution, but thanks to Gibson, he was instead left to rot on death row until he had a chance to release him. An order was issued to wipe out bionic technology, which would later came to be known as the "Bionic Purge," and not only was the development of the technology banned, but anyone who wore a bionic part became a criminal. TASC's bionics program was closed, and TASC personnel with bionic augmentations were ordered to turn in their bionics or have them forcibly removed. Soldiers who were supposed to serve the government were suddenly forced to return their bionic implants to the government, but for some bionic soldiers, this was easier said than done. Many lost their implants, unable to walk or even see. For soldiers who were seriously injured during their missions, the presence or absence of their bionic implants was a matter of life or death.
This heavy-handed tactic backfired, as pro-bionic followers rioted, and many of TASC's bionic operatives who did not want to lose the powers they gained through bionic technology chose to secretly flee instead of giving up their artificial parts. The chaos eventually subsided, and bionic technology was effectively purged from the nation, while pro-bionic followers went underground. However, although the Imperials had been devastated by Spencer, their ideals had not died out yet, with their surviving members working with TASC's rogue bionic members to obtain bionic technology and plot to overthrow the United States. They plant bombs and attack small government targets, steadily increasing their power. Eventually, a bionic revival movement called "BioReign" was born.
After five years of small-scale terrorist attacks, BioReign obtained a powerful experimental weapon of mass destruction, and detonated it in Ascension City, the largest city in the United States. The bomb caused a huge earthquake, turning the city into ruins and killing all citizens. Taking advantage of the confusion, BioReign invaded and occupied the city, seizing control of its air defense system. With BioReign's complete takeover, the United States, not knowing the enemy's intentions, and with failed attacks by the army and air force, was left without options. Gibson saw this as his chance to release Spencer, ordering him to scout the area and discover what happened. Spencer was devastated, awaiting execution in a death row cell for years, having had the bionic arm that made him a hero stolen from him. But if he decide to put his arm back on, he will be the only one able to infiltrate the ruined city. He's the only man who once fought the empire and destroyed it, and he had nothing left to lose.
