Interestingly enough I don't get the crash in a copy of 2.7, but do get the crash in a copy of 2.6. The former was build on 10.6, the later on 10.5. Both 3.1 and 3.2 crash reliably for me (after porting the script to py3k) /usr/bin/python doesn't crash, but that's because it doesn't get proxy information from the system.
