But there should be a way to prevent generating them, and Vinay has agreed with that. Now we just need a patch :) (he's probably working on one...)

Flume should not break if it receives NULs.  But there should be a way to prevent generating them, and Vinay has agreed with that.  Now we just need a patch :)  (he's probably working on one...)
