I don't understand why do you want to have a special case for Linux. sys.platform is already different for each major version of:

 * FreeBSD
 * OpenBSD
 * NetBSD
 * unixware
 * openunix
 * sco_sv
 * sunos
 * hp-ux

(Ok, some of them are dead and you cannot expect new major versions :-))
