Synopsis for "Choosing Sides"

Batman, the Phantom Stranger, and other heroes continue to confront the demons from Hell and the Spectre. The Spectre attacks the Phantom Stranger to take him out of the equation and causes his mouth and eyes to disappear. Madame Xanadu struggles to contain the portion of the Spectre's power within her crystal ball.

Meanwhile, Captain Marvel, S.T.R.I.P.E. and Starfire find the Spear of Destiny in Earth's orbit. Starfire grabs it, but its power overwhelms her and she attacks the other heroes.

At the same time, the Justice Society of America seeks out Doctor Fate at the Tower of Fate, which has again manifested an extension of itself on the Earth.

In Hell, Superman and the other heroes battle demons in an attempt to reignite the fires of Hell. Soon, they are opposed in their quest by the demon Nebiros, wielding the Trident of Lucifer.

In Purgatory, Wonder Woman, Sentinel and the other heroes decide to Hal Jordan back to Earth as Sentinel believes that he may be the right person to bond with the Spectre. However, Angels appear and attempt to stop them from taking him. The other heroes consigned to Purgatory attack the Angels so the heroes can escape with Jordan.

Back on Earth, Madame Xanadu has a vision of the future and allows her crystal ball containing a portion of the Spectre's powers to be destroyed. Soon Hal Jordan, in the form of a Green Lantern, and the other heroes return to Earth. Xanadu reveals that, in her vision, she foresaw Jordan as their savior. However, Jordan imprudently attacks the Sprectre (Asmodel), who immediately turns him into glass and shatters him.
