Hawkgirl is a legacy name used by several characters in the DC Universe. She wields a magical mace and acts as a female counterpart to the super-hero Hawkman. The character has been involved with the All-Star Squadron, Birds of Prey, Justice League and Justice Society.

Shiera Sanders, Carter Hall's wife, was the first to use the name during the Golden Age. Originally, Chay-Ara and her lover Prince Khufu were killed by Hath-Set with a knife forged from Nth Metal in ancient Egypt. This created a bond between them, causing the duo to be reborn multiple times throughout the centuries.

Shayera Hol, Katar Hol's wife from the planet Thanagar also used the Hawkgirl name during the Silver Age before choosing the name of Hawkwoman.

Kendra Saunders, the niece and reincarnation of Shiera, would later take the name.

Shiera Sanders was created by Gardner Fox and Dennis Neville, first appearing in Flash Comics #1 (1940). Shayera Hol was created by Fox and Joe Kubert, first appearing in The Brave and the Bold #34 (1961). Kendra Saunders was created by James Robinson, David S. Goyer, and Scott Benefiel, first appearing in JSA Secret Files and Origins #1 (1999).
