Chac

Chac is an unsent boss from Final Fantasy X-2 who was formerly Lady Yunalesca. She is found in Via Infinito on the 80th floor. Chac is encountered later as a regular enemy on floors 81–84. Both forms can appear in Oversoul form.

Visually, Chac appears as a turquoise-colored Basilisk with a pink third eye but is larger in comparison to weaker members of the Basilisk fiend family.

Battle[]

Stony Glare.

Stony Glare.

Chac is a difficult enemy capable of petrifying party members with Stony Glare, which works regardless of immunities. An ordinary Chac never uses Stony Glare if only one character is alive, regardless of whether the other two characters have been petrified and shattered, KO'd, or did not participate in the battle. An Oversouled Chac, however, makes no exception, and can especially be dangerous for L-sized creatures who always fight alone. Chac can break a petrified character with its normal attack, removing them from battle. Using special dresspheres is also ill-advised as Stony Glare will automatically trigger a Game Over if the character using her special dressphere gets petrified. Both of her supporting components will also simultaneously be petrified.

Chac's ultimate attack, Heaven's Cataract, is used at any whim and does large damage to everyone in a 120-degree angle, and can shatter them if they are petrified. Compared to the previous Basilisk fiends, Chac's Heaven's Cataract has a damage constant of 58, which can make it inflict over 14,000 damage (13,994~15,801 before taking into account Magic Defense, Shell, and stat reductions), and reduces all stats by 10 levels. Chac does not use Heaven's Cataract in Oversoul form, instead using Stony Glare more often, which can be more dangerous, given Chac's increased agility.

Chac's normal attack pattern involves using Stony Glare on any unpetrified characters for the first four turns (or a normal attack, if only one character is alive), and then a normal attack on the fifth turn before finishing up with Heaven's Cataract, after which the attack pattern resets. At the start of the battle, a random turn in this attack pattern is chosen.

Destroy Remedy.

Destroy Remedy.

The Oversoul attack pattern includes four additional attack types: Destroy Soft and Destroy Remedy, which respectively deduce one Soft and one Remedy from the player's inventory while also doing damage. A normal attack is used in place of these when an Alchemist is present in the party. MP Break can drain all of a character's MP. On characters at 50% HP or lower, the dummy Hunter's Gaze attack is sometimes used, which does no damage. The Oversoul attack pattern goes as follows:

  • Turn 1: Stony Glare
  • Turn 2: Destroy Remedy (Normal Attack if the party has no Remedies or an Alchemist is present in the party)
  • Turn 3: Normal Attack (2/7 chance), Normal Attack (1/7 chance; Hunter's Gaze if the target has 50% of max HP or less), MP Break (1/7 chance), Stony Glare (1/7 chance), Destroy Soft (1/7 chance; Normal Attack if the party has no Softs or an Alchemist is present in the party), Destroy Remedy (1/7 chance; Normal Attack if the party has no Remedies or an Alchemist is present in the party)
  • Turn 4: Repeat from Turn 3

Strategy[]

General strategies[]

It is good to pack extra Softs and Remedies to cure petrified characters before Chac breaks them.

In the International + Last Mission and HD Remaster versions, the easiest way to deal with Chac is to drain its MP. If it has no MP, it cannot use Heaven's Cataract, and is thus helpless against a team of Berserkers with Evade & Counter. Draining its MP can be done in various ways, the easiest of which is by using a Soul Spring.

In the original version, an uncomplicated and effective way to defeat Chac involves bringing a Gunner in Critical condition who is wearing the Cat Nip accessory. Trigger Happy will deal in 9,999 damage per hit.

Killing lesser Basilisks (Gucumatz or Kukulcan) and then escaping from battle as soon as an Oversouled one is encountered, guarantees a Chac in a subsequent encounter will be Oversouled. This can more easily be done in the Fiend Arena, where the player can battle the Funky Divas team repeatedly until Gucumatz is Oversouled, and then escape. Once the player returns to Via Infinito, Chac will be in Oversoul.

Equipping the Adamantite accessory to either a character wearing the Berserker or the Dark Knight dressphere can help survive Chac's powerful attacks; a downside is that the attack rate will be lower than usual.

As a non-Oversouled Chac does not use Stony Glare if only one character is present, one can consider fighting Chac with a single character. Chac's non-Oversoul version's physical attacks can be dodged with the Berserker dressphere's Evade and Counter ability, making its Heaven's Cataract the sole move a single Berserker will have to fear. To avoid this, the Berserker can use a Soul Spring on Chac to disable Heaven's Cataract.

An easy way to defeat both the normal and Oversoul versions of Chac is to bribe them with 1,751,400 gil in normal form, and 1,838,972 in Oversoul. The player can also bribe via Lady Luck's Slots without spending gil.

Turn-denying strategies[]

Another strategy is to use three hasted Warriors using Delay Buster (only works on an Oversouled Chac), denying it from ever getting a turn. Chaining attacks on Chac also delays its turn; three fast Thieves, especially hasted (with Speed Bracers), can defeat it without it getting a chance to attack, as Thieves attack twice per Attack command, and if they attack one after another they build a continuous chain. This strategy can be used to unlock the trophy/achievement Full Chain in the HD Remaster version.

The player can set ATB mode to Active, ATB speed to fast, and have First Strike either from Thief's auto-ability, or the Highroad Winds/Mounted Assault Garment Grids. Yuna and Rikku can equip Strength-boosting accessories. For a specific strategy Yuna and Rikku can forgo Haste-giving accessories, while Paine equips Bloodlust and Wring, then replace Paine's accessories with Cat Nip and Haste Bangle/Speed Bracer. In the battle the player can try to time Yuna's and Rikku's normal attacks with Paine's to create a chain, with Paine as main damage dealer for her fast attack animation with Haste; Yuna's and Rikku's longer normal attack animations at normal speed keep Chac in stagger longer.

Creature strategies[]

Another way to defeat Chac in the HD Remaster version is to capture Concherer or Shell Shocker and equip them with the Megiddo Garment Grid. With the Key to Success and Ragnarok accessories, they gain massive stat boosts and Spellspring. The player should leave either fiend's skills alone and level them up to about level 80 (85 for Shell Shocker). When the battle an ordinary Chac starts, Concherer or Shell Shocker will likely use their Gunk ability early on, eliminating the danger of Heaven's Cataract. In the case of Shell Shocker, though, it will have to learn Gunk by surviving a powerful enemy ability while in battle and at a high enough level. If Chac is Oversouled, however, it can easily eliminate the lone creature with Stony Glare as soon as it gets the chance. A similar strategy can be employed with Baralai or Garik Ronso due to their Looming Glacier and MP Blowout abilities, respectively, both of which reduce an enemy's MP to zero. In the case of the latter two characters, Break Damage Limit is recommended, while Break HP Limit can be ignored, as long as they are at a high enough level and have high stats all around.

The player can opt to prepare for battle with Chac by having at least one fast-hitting creature in their party (e.g. a high-level Machina Leader or Lacerta with Auto-Haste) and two other party members either providing support or dishing out damage to Chac. One or two party members can repeatedly spam fast-moving physical attacks on Chac to keep it stunned (e.g. Machina Leader's Impale or a hasted Yuna or Rikku with the Thief dressphere) while the remaining member(s) can cast Black Sky to further chain the attacks. This works in both regular and Oversoul forms and can be further supplemented with an optional Icestrike or Omnistrike, as Chac is weak to Ice.

Another viable option is to prevent Chac from taking a single turn through the use of the Quick Attack move. The player needs to have an L-sized creature with high (>200) Luck and Agility and as close to 255 Strength as possible. This can be done easily when the girls' levels are at least 80 and capturing a L-sized creature. The two most viable choices for this are the Anything Eater (obtainable after defeating it in the Ruin Depths) and Heavy Sallet (obtainable after discovering the Cactuar Hollow).

To raise Luck to the required level, the player should equip two Rabite's Foot accessories, available from Oversoul Jumbo Cactuar as a common or rare drop. Alternatively, the Rabite's Foot can be obtained from the Cactuar Cup. To ensure Chac does not get a turn, the monster should be equipped with the Mercurial Strike Garment Grid (can be replaced with Peerless once Quick Attack is learned) and then be fed a Sprint Shoes accessory and three Speed Bracers. It is important that these are fed and not equipped, as equipping them will provide the monster with a move other than Attack and Quick Attack, which can cause Chac to attack with Heaven's Cataract (normal form) or Stony Glare (Oversoul). Either the Ragnarok accessory or Font of Power Garment Grid will help with MP preservation. If available, the Key to Success accessory can replace a Rabite's Foot as it provides a 100 point boost to Luck in addition to a +100% max HP boost and the Double All effect.

Creature Creator[]

Chac is recruitable into the party after the player defeats it in Via Infinito in Chapter 5. Chac cannot learn Stony Glare, but retains Heaven's Cataract and comes with Ailment Def. (complete immunity to status ailments), Vigor (heals self for 50% of max HP), and Stonetouch. Depending on the level of YRP, Chac may come into the party capped at 9,999 HP due to the lack of access to Total Limit Break, being the only L-sized creature to never have access to it. This may be an oversight.

It is advisable to put Chac on the Higher Power Garment Grid and then either consume an Invincible on it or equip it with one to allow it to break both HP and damage limits.

Fiend Tale[]

Another notable Chac was created from the spirit of a sailor's son who was among many who were killed by Sin, his village destroyed. Regardless, Chac ends up gaining a new family in fiends and teaching his adopted son what he learned from his father.
