An elixir is a clear, sweet-flavored liquid used for medicinal purposes. Its namesake comes from the Arabic word الإكسير al-ʾiksīr, which is the Arabization of the Ancient Greek word ξήριον xērion, used to describe medicinal powder application to open wounds for them to heal and dry, explaining the more salve- and balm-like depictions within official illustrations of earlier Final Fantasy installments.
