Final Fantasy V elements

The following is a list of elements in Final Fantasy V. Elements are gameplay features used to modify damage. While enemies typically have innate elemental properties, the player's party members begin as being neutral toward elements.

Mechanics[]

The damage inflicted by elemental attacks varies depending on potential elemental boosts active on the attacker, and target interactions with the relevant elements.

Elemental boosts[]

  • Elemental modifiers increase damage.
  • The same element can only be boosted once.

Target interactions[]

Elemental modifiers to incoming damage behave as follows:

Modifier Effect Notes
Weakness The target takes increased damage.

There are various levels of increased damage:

Resistance The target takes reduced damage. Via dedicated modifiers.
Immunity The target takes no damage.
Absorption The target is healed instead of damaged. Via dedicated modifiers.

Multiple modifiers (or multiple instances of the same modifiers) do not stack. The following priority order applies:

  1. Absorption
  2. Immunity
  3. Resistance
  4. Weakness

List of elements[]

Fire[]

Fire is one of the most ubiquitous elements in the game, alongside ice and lightning. Faris, Karnak, and the Great Sea Trench are associated with it lore-wise.

Party members can inflict fire-elemental damage in various ways, including but not limited to: fire-elemental weapons like the Flametongue, the Fire/Fira/Firaga line of Black Magic and spellblades, and the summon Ifrit.

Ice[]

Ice is one of the most ubiquitous elements in the game, alongside fire and lightning.

Party members can inflict ice-elemental damage in various ways, including but not limited to: ice-elemental weapons like the Icebrand, the Blizzard/Blizzara/Blizzaga line of Black Magic and spellblades, and the summon Shiva.

Lightning[]

Lightning is one of the most ubiquitous elements in the game, alongside fire and ice.

Party members can inflict lightning-elemental damage in various ways, including but not limited to: lightning-elemental weapons like the Thunder Bow, the Thunder/Thundara/Thundaga line of Black Magic and spellblades, and the summon Ramuh.

Certain lightning-elemental attacks, such as Thundaga spellblade are very effective against one of the game's superbosses, Omega.

Earth[]

Earth is a less prevalent element than fire, ice, and lightning. Galuf, Krile, the Ronka Ruins, and the Pyramid of Moore are associated with it lore-wise.

Almost all means of inflicting earth-elemental damage consist of spells. Some of them, such as Titan, Earthquake, and Earth Shaker, automatically miss floating targets.

Wind[]

Wind is a less prevalent element than fire, ice, and lightning. Bartz, Tycoon (via the Wind Shrine), and the Island Shrine are associated with it lore-wise.

Party members can inflict wind-elemental damage in various ways, including but not limited to: wind-elemental weapons like the Air Knife, the Aero/Aera/Aeroga line of Blue Magic, and the summon Syldra.

When boosted, wind-elemental spells like Syldra are among the best multi-targeted attacks party members have access to.

Water[]

Water is a less prevalent element than fire, ice, and lightning. Lenna, Walse, and Istory Falls are associated with it lore-wise.

Party members can inflict water-elemental damage in various ways, including but not limited to: the summon Leviathan, the throwable item Water Scroll, and the !Gaia spell Waterfall.

It is generally considered a neglected element. For instance, it is the only element that can be boosted in only one way. Likewise, many abilities that visually look water-elemental (e.g. the !Blue Magic Aqua Breath, and the !Gaia spells Big Wave and Tsunami) are non-elemental.

Poison[]

Poison is a less prevalent element than fire, ice, and lightning. It is mostly associated with the poison and sap statuses, as poison-elemental abilities often attempt to inflict either. However, the HP damage due to poison ticks and sap is not poison-elemental.

Party members can inflict poison-elemental damage in various ways, including but not limited to: poison-elemental weapons like the Poison Axe, the Bio Black Magic and spellblade, and the !Gaia spell Poison Mist.

Holy[]

Holy is a less prevalent element than fire, ice, and lightning. It is mostly associated with its namesake spell, two of the legendary weapons, and certain powerful enemy abilities.

Party members can inflict holy-elemental damage in various ways, including but not limited to: holy-elemental weapons like the Excalibur, the Holy White Magic and spellblade, and the Holy Breath mix.
