Description

Sakhnin is situated in the Lower Galilee, south to Karmi'el. Pop. 21'000 inh, mostly Muslims. The unofficial flag is white with black emblem and no inscription. The municipal emblem was published in the official gazette (Rashumot), 'Publications Gazette' section (Yalkut HaPirsumim), YP 4887, 31 May 2000, after becoming a municipality, replacing a previous emblem published YP 1450, 16 May 1968.

Sakhnin became famous last year as its football team I'hud Bene Sakhnin (Saknin Juniors United) became the first ever Arabic-Israeli team to become the cup holder. Photo of fan flag of the football club at www.ynet.co.il.
It is costumery to see it as keeping the name of the ancient Jewish town of Sikhnin (also known as Sikhniya, Kefar Sikhni and Kefar Sigana). According to local tradition the current town was established during the reign of the Caliph Omar (634–644). Local Council since 1965 and Municipality since 1995.
