This PR is a copy of the approved PR #861, which is now out of sync and is not mergeable

This PR also adds @timvaillancourt (me) as a contributor

In case this PR introduced Go code changes:

  • contributed code is using same conventions as original code
  • script/cibuild returns with no formatting errors, build errors or unit test errors.
