As I noted when rejecting the 3.7 backport PR, I don't think we should be making this kind of change in a maintenance release, especially at the end of 2.7's life but it is up to @benjaminp to make the call for 2.7.

It's a bug fix, so I think it makes sense to propose for backporting. But of course, the release manager will decide...
