hack down
To remove something, typically a tree, by cutting it down. A noun or pronoun can be used between "hack" and "down." The landscaper came and hacked down the tree that was leaning precariously over our roof. The wind last night was brutal, and I have no idea how we're gonna hack down those dangling tree branches. I see that her kite got stuck in a tree. I just don't know how to hack it down without destroying it in the process!
