Agreed.  +1 on the proposed API in this regard.  It's pretty easy to
grok.  I also like that item access here mirrors how paths are treated
as sequences/iterables in other parts of the API.

It wouldn't surprise me if the join syntax is the most contentious
part of the proposal. ;)
