it's an old quirk in command.com (and friends).  it has
always treated "=" as a kind whitespace.  try:

    echo=>q
    copy=q==qq
    type====qq
    more<====q
    echo===(etc)

probably something they inherited from CP/M...

python=spam.py doesn't really work, though...
