Thanks for recommending the article.  I particularly liked this quote in the
section on assembly language:

    Assembly programmers didn't ever think about objects or inheritance, and
    gave limited thought to functions and data structures. The value of such
    constructs is hidden when the language has no native way of expression
    them.
