Guido van Rossum's tutorial, at

is a nice way to start for somebody already experienced with
programming.  You'll no doubt also want to download the Python
2.0 distribution for your favourite platform, see:
http://www.pythonlabs.com/products/python2.0/download_python2.0.html
and play with it...
