I know of more than a dozen different formats that use that extension, and Word is not the oldest nor the newest nor the most common, I think. (Though it is certainly one of the most command and probably either the second or third most common if you count all the different Word formats as the same format, which they're not, but I digress.) The issue is confused further because Word can read other common formats that share the DOC extension but are not Word formats. - jonadab
