In my install, site-packages the directory is still there, but there's
nothing in it. All shipped packages have been moved elsewhere. However,
I immediatly dropped a whole load of packages into site-packages, and
they worked no worries. (Except for Numeric, which I think is a compile
problem, and which I've sent a bug report to sourceforge about.)
