In my experience people with children tend to make more conservative choices with respect to jobs: they'll choose a less "risky" job in order to provide guaranteed income and benefits for their dependants. People without children are free to choose more "speculative" options where there is a higher risk of intermittent income or health benefits. For example: I have no dependants. I can actually live off of unemployment benefits (I can pay rent, pay bills, pay for COBRA benefits and have enough left over to go golfing once a week). Therefore, choosing a career path that might involve more "fun" or higher peak pay but also risk periods of unemployment is a more viable option for me than it would be for somebody with three children to support. -- Grant Edwards grante Yow!
