Have you tried the tutorials on www.python.org. They have the tutorial by Guido van Rossum and Fred L. Drake, Jr. There is "An Easy Tutorial to Python" also in HTML. If you download the ActiveState distribution you would have both of these and a few more right on your computer along with the Library Reference. This should be more than enough to keep you busy for a while.
