Sounds like a bug somewhere. There is a good chance that the bug is in 
bsddb 1.85, which is reported to have bugs. You may want to try using 
Sleepycat BSDDB 3.x or 4.0 instead, to which a Python wrapper is 
available at sf.net/projects/pybsddb. If you try this approach, please 
report success or failure.
