I only have a single installation of Python :

Setting the  PYTHONPATH  environment variable
was only an experiment, really just grasping at straws,
and I now have it  REM'd  out in the  autoexec.bat  file ...   

I do have an installation of  Magenta  which uses Python :

... Could this interfere ???  
... I don't see how ...

I also have the wxPython / wxWindows  
and Pmc packages that seem to function OK ...

My latest experiment was to stick the 2 pyd files,
_imaging.pyd and _imagingtk.pyd, into the Samples folder 
along with the  viewer.py  program that I'm trying to test :
... Same Result, No luck ...
