I also see an 8-10% speed decrease in 2.4 (I built) from 2.3.3 (shipped 
w/Fedora2) in the program I'm writing (best of 3 trials each).  Memory 
use seems to be about the same.

2.4:   real    2m44.131s
2.3.3: real    2m29.865s
