I know what you mean about Perl. I have probably re-learned Perl 12 times. If you will not need to maintain any existing code, go directly to Python 3.x. Not every third-party support Python 3 yet, but it is coming for most. If you can eschew 2.x, then do. Maintaining a source base targeting both 2.x and 3.x can be done, but it is not always a simple picture. Learning a new language at 45 is a great idea. Do it again at 65.
