Later that year, Gamble was possessed by a Vezda while on his first away mission. The initial possession burned out Gamble's eyes and while the real Gamble appeared to take control a few times, his brain scan indicated that he was brain dead. In order to stop the entity, Pelia shot Gamble with a phaser, forcing the Vezda out of him. Montgomery Scott then trapped it in the transporter buffer, but Gamble did not survive. Pelia insisted to the devastated M'Benga that the Vezda had to be stopped and that the real Gamble had been dead since the possession began. M'Benga later personally contacted Gamble's family to let them know. (SNW: "Through the Lens of Time")

After escaping, the Vezda rebuilt Gamble's body from data stored in the transporter buffer to serve as its physical form as the Vezda attempted to release its kind from the prison on Vadia IX. It arrived on Skygowan, and under the name Zeperez claimed to be a messenger of the gods. The Vezda revealed to M'Benga that it had retained the real Gamble's memories from the possession and because M'Benga became a part of Gamble, he became a part of the Vezda too which was why it needed M'Benga to open the doorway from Skygowan to Vadia IX. When Marie Batel reimprisoned the Vezda, Gamble's rebuilt body disintegrated. (SNW: "New Life and New Civilizations")
