A proximity fuse was a type of fuse used by the Romulans in the 23rd century.

In 2266, the commander of a Romulan Bird-of-Prey ordered Decius to put a nuclear warhead with a proximity fuse in among debris they were firing at the USS Enterprise. (TOS: "Balance of Terror")
