Aratenik

Aratenik was a Romulan who served as Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire some time before the ascension of Dralath.

In the 2150s, Aratenik was First Consul. (ENT novel: The Good That Men Do)

Among the decorations of his offices in the Central Court was a display of weapons. He was assassinated by an ambitious underling with one of these weapons, so ever since Romulan Security has ensured that the weapons on display were drained of charge and/or had the edges of their blades dulled. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Heart)

In Vulcan's Heart there is a small implication that Dralath was the underling assassin, but the point is ambiguous enough that he may have only been likening his own ambition to that of the assassin.

In an alternate timeline, Saavik appeared in front of the Continuing Committee, then headed by Praetor Aratenik. (ST novel: The Chimes at Midnight)
