Astatine (symbol At) is a chemical element, atomic number 85 on the periodic table.
Characteristics and history[]
Astatine, in its most stable form, has an atomic mass of 210. This radioactive element was discovered by Humans for the first time on Earth's North American continent in the United States in the year 1940. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)
A planet in the Orellius system colonized in 2360 by the Santa Maria's colonists had several deposits of astatine. The colonists believed the astatine was the source of the duonetic field that prevented their technology from working. In 2370, Miles O'Brien discovered the astatine was not the source, as in actuality it was a duonetic field generator of Alixus' design. (DS9 episode: "Paradise")
In 2381, the Starfleet Corps of Engineers team on the USS Musgrave used astatine to no success in an attempt to destroy the farantine deposits on Maxia Zeta IV. (ST novel: A Singular Destiny)
