Dwarf planet

See also "Dwarf Planet", a TOS comic.

A dwarf planet is a planetary body found in a star system with sufficient mass to make it spheroid, but with insufficient effect on other bodies in its orbit to clear the neighborhood of other bodies. Bodies which can clear the neighborhood are known as planets, while planetoids are another small planet-like body comparable to dwarf planets.

History and specifics[]

The ninth planet in the Sol system, Pluto, was classified as a dwarf planet in the year 2006. For over three hundred years to follow, its classification switched between planet and dwarf planet ten or more times. In the First Splinter timeline, Pluto had once more been reclassified as a planet shortly before it was absorbed and destroyed by a Borg cube in 2380. (TNG novel: Before Dishonor)

A dwarf planet once collided with Galos Sigma, destroying that world's native civilization. (DTI novel: Forgotten History)

Dwarf planets in the outer reaches of Vega were destroyed in a civil war, with their remains forming an orbital disk of debris in the system. (ENT - Rise of the Federation novel: A Choice of Futures, TOS novel: The Captain's Oath)

SLV-5171, a 24th century Federation archeological outpost, was sited on a rogue dwarf planet within the Briar Patch which had once been inhabited before the world's star died. (Adventures RPG module: Beta Quadrant Sourcebook)
