Jonas Salk was a 20th century Human man, an historic medical researcher.

Biography[]

In the early 1950s decade, Salk developed the first polio vaccine. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual, VOY novel: Echoes)

Legacy[]

At least four Federation Starfleet starships have been named USS Salk in his honor, from the 23rd century USS Salk to the 25th century Olympic-class hospital ship USS Salk.

In 24th century Starfleet Academy classes attended by Kathryn Janeway, Tuvok, and Tom Paris, Professor Brown spent two weeks discussing the quandary of whether to sacrifice a person if it could save a thousand lives. As an example, he posited what would happen if Salk had been sacrificed, but the choice had been made before he developed the polio vaccine. (VOY novel: Echoes)

In 2371, when Kes suggested that The Doctor pick a name for himself based on people who inspired him, he considered Salk. (VOY episode: "Ex Post Facto")
