The Minotaur was a monster from the Greek mythology of the planet Earth. In the legends, it had the head of a bull, but the body of a man.
History and specifics[]
In the mythological story Theseus and the Minotaur, Theseus underwent a hero's quest to travel through the maze and subdue the Minotaur. (TOS novel: Preserver, TNG novel: Do Comets Dream?)
Dante Alighieri adapted the character for his Divine Comedy poem Inferno.
In 2286, Lieutenant Castille recreated Inferno through mass illusions aboard the USS Enterprise-A. The bridge crew encountered the Minotaur in the seventh circle of Hell. Spock tried to subdue it with a Vulcan nerve pinch. When that proved ineffective, James T. Kirk had the group run evasively and lead the Minotaur directly in the line of fire of a group of armed Centaurs, who struck it with numerous arrows. In the 2360s, Rampartian rebels used "Minotaur" as one of their passwords on the planet Rampart. Brainwashing preventing ordinary citizens from thinking about mythological topics. (TNG novel: Gulliver's Fugitives)
In 2361, Zak Kebron disguised himself as a statue to spy on and arrest Erril G'Doh during a suspected act of treason. The statue's headpiece resembled the Minotaur's head. (NF - No Limits short story: "Waiting for G'Doh, or, How I Learned to Stop Moving and Hate People")
In the 2370s, Theseus and the Minotaur was adapted as a holodeck program aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Simon Tarses demonstrated the program to Kio sar-Bensu and Tormod Engvig in 2371, but retreated when they actually came across the huge creature. (TNG novel: Do Comets Dream?)
In 2371, Harry Kim was reminded of the Minotaur when he saw a dead Akerian in body armor, its head adorned with a horned helmet. (VOY novel: The Murdered Sun)
When Benjamin Sisko encountered the Glant in the year 2386, he noted that one of them resembled the Minotaur. (DS9 novel: Original Sin)
