Radium

Radium (symbol Ra) is a chemical element, atomic number 88 on the periodic table.

Characteristics and history[]

Radium, in its most stable form, has an atomic mass of 226, and was discovered by Humans for the first time in France on Earth's European continent in the year 1898. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

Unaware of its dangers, in the 20th century, Humans used radium as an ingredient in paint for readouts that could glow in the dark. The dials of Flight 19's aircraft had radium dials. (TNG - Strange New Worlds IV short story: "Flight 19")

When Q asked Spock for nine reasons to save humanity from an approaching asteroid in 1999, the seventh thing he mentioned was their discovery of radium. (ST audiobook: Spock vs. Q)
