Retinax 5

Retinax 5 (also known as Retinax Five or simply Retinax) was a 23rd century medicine used to correct various visual impairments.

History and specifics[]

Daniel Latham had trouble reading computer screens, even with his Retinax treatments. Because of that, he preferred to read and write with old-fashioned books. (TOS novel: The Case of the Colonist's Corpse)

James T. Kirk was particularly sensitive to Retinax. Because of this sensitivity, which Kirk considered an "allergy," Leonard McCoy gave him a pair of eyeglasses for his 52nd birthday. (TOS movie & novelization: The Wrath of Khan; TOS novel: In the Name of Honor)

Ryan Handler's extreme nearsightedness required him to have a Retinax booster every six months, which caused some problems with his Starfleet career. (TOS novel: Probe)

Ralph Hopplemeyer and Chiang Sen-Wu also wore glasses, as they were allergic to Retinax. (FASA RPG modules: The Strider Incident, A Doomsday Like Any Other)

Like other ocular compounds, Retinax did not work well on Orions, and Grey Orions were allergic to it. (FASA RPG - The Orions module: Book of Deep Knowledge)
