Geordi La Forge's sandwich in 2370.

A sandwich is a type of food created by placing a portion of a meal in between two pieces of bread or a similar container, in order to make it edible by hand, eliminating the need to utensils to handle the food.

The term can also be used in a general sense to describe any type of substance that is contained between two layers of another substance.

History and specifics[]

Scotty used the word "sandwich" to refer to the makeup of a piece of technology which was made of three layers of two materials, which caused the food synthesizer in the galley of the USS Enterprise to believe that he was requesting a meal. Scotty canceled the process by kicking the offending unit. (TOS - Worlds Apart novel: How Much for Just the Planet?)

When tribbles infested the Enterprise, James T. Kirk found that they had gotten into the food synthesizers when he tried to order a chicken sandwich and coffee. (TOS episode: "The Trouble with Tribbles")

Captain Rachel Garrett enjoyed a sandwich and salad for her lunch-time meal. (ST - Enterprise Logs short story: "Hour of Fire")

Kelvin timeline[]

In 2258 of the Kelvin timeline, Montgomery Scott, upon learning that Spock was from the future, asked if they still had sandwiches. (TOS movie: Star Trek)
