Sydney was a city in Australia on Earth. It was the largest and most important city on the continent, noted for its nightlife, restaurants, fashion, culture and world-famous landmarks. Phoenix Enterprises Limited began in Sydney as a sea-going shipping business in the late 20th century, and was one of the few large businesses to survive the Eugenics Wars relatively unscathed. Sydney managed to avoid any major damage during World War III (Last Unicorn RPG module: A Cadet's Guide to Sector 001 Earth).

In the Kelvin timeline, Sydney was conquered by the Augments during the Eugenics Wars in 1992. Initially, it was ruled by Bernard Maltuvis as part of the Australasia nation. He later renamed it Maltuvisland.
When Maltuvis betrayed his ally Khan Noonien Singh of the Khanate, Khan launched a counter-offensive into South Asia and Australia. An Augment planted the Khanate's flag in sight of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. In 1996, Humans succeeded in overthrowing their Augment rulers, ending the Eugenics Wars. (TOS - Khan comic: "Issue 3")
