"The Homecoming" is an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It first aired in September 1993 as the premiere of the second season.
With a Bajoran extremist faction growing in influence, Kira Nerys rescues a war hero from a Cardassian prison camp. (season premiere, part 1 of 3)
Summary[]
Boslic freighter captain Rionoj visits Quark’s and asks Quark to deliver a Bajoran earring that was given to her by a Cardassian on Cardassia IV. Quark takes it to Major Kira, who identifies it as belonging to Li Nalas, a hero of the Bajoran Resistance who was presumed to have been killed years earlier. Kira asks Commander Sisko for the use of a runabout to rescue Li from Cardassia IV. Sisko carefully considers the implications and, hoping that Li will be able to unite the disparate Bajoran factions, approves. Chief O’Brien modifies a runabout’s power emissions to look like a Lissepian ship and joins Kira on the mission and Li Nalas is successfully rescued.
Back on Deep Space 9, Li is given a rapturous welcome by his fellow Bajorans and Minister Jaro Essa sees an opportunity to use Li to political gain. Meanwhile, Quark is attacked by a Bajoran extremist group called the Circle. Li is horrified that Bajorans were responsible. Overwhelmed his growing influence, Li attempts to stow away on a departing freighter but is found out by the crew. He confesses that his reputation is unearned, but Sisko points out that Bajor simply needs a symbol. Li visits Bajor and soon returns to the station, where he is to replace Kira.
