"The Ship" is the 100th episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It was the second episode of the show's fifth season and first aired during the week of 7 October 1996. The episode was written by Hans BeimlerMA, based on a story by Pam WiggintonMA and Rick CasonMA, and was directed by Kim FriedmanMA.
Benjamin Sisko and his crew find a crashed Dominion warship and attempt a salvage operation, although the Dominion are intent on stopping them for a reason unknown to the crew.
Summary[]
Captain Sisko has brought an away team, including Dax, O’Brien and Worf to the planet Torga IV in the Gamma Quadrant. The team see a Jem’Hadar ship crash near their position and Sisko immediately sees the intelligence information that salvaging the ship could lead to. A second Jem’Hadar ship arrives at the planet, destroying the runabout in orbit and transports down Jem’Hadar troops who kill T’Lor and shoot Muniz, two members of the away team. Sisko and the others seek refuge in the Jem’Hadar ship.
Kilana, the Vorta commander of the second ship, meets with Sisko and negotiates with Sisko while a Jem’Hadar soldier transports into the crashed ship. The Jem’Hadar deploys a sensor device within the ship which is noticed by O’Brien, who is attacked by the Jem’Hadar. The ailing Muniz is able to shoot the Jem’Hadar soldier dead. Sisko realises that there is something aboard the ship that the Dominion want. Muniz continues to get worse and the Jem’Hadar start detonating concussion shells outside the ship. The crew attempt to lift off but the attempt fails. Muniz dies during the attempt.
Sisko and Dax discover what Kilana wants - there is a Changeling aboard the ship, but it has been injured and soon dies. Kilana’s soldiers commit suicide for failing to save the Changeling, and Sisko permits her to remove the Changeling’s remains.
The Defiant arrives and salvages the ship. O’Brien and Worf hold a wake for Muniz, while Sisko reflects on the deaths of his crew. Dax points out that the sacrifices of the five crew and the intel from the Jem’Hadar ship may save five thousand lives, or five million. Sisko comments that doesn’t make it easier.
