USS Hammer, also the UNSS Hammer, was a 22nd century Federation destroyer starship in service to Starfleet. (ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology, FASA RPG module: The Romulan War)
Service history and disposition[]
In 2161, on reference stardate 0/8909, the Hammer participated in a joint war game exercise with Alpha Centauran and Earth ships. Procedural misunderstandings due to language translation errors resulted in a Centauran corvette unintentionally ramming the UNSS Scythe, which caused her full-powered laser fire to strike Hammer and UNSS Enmity, causing 232 casualties. Scythe destroyed the Hammer and Enmity before engineers could disable the ship's laser battery. All hands were lost on both ships. (ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology)
Legacy[]
The disaster proved that Starfleet officers lacked standardized training, and sparked the chartering of Starfleet Academy. (ST reference: Worlds of the Federation)
In his commencement address in the 2160s decade, Commandant Stavros Niarchos emphasized the importance of united training for cadets to prevent a recurrence of the tragedy. (ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology)
