Description[]
- Rumors of a secret alliance between the Dominion and the Klingon Empire lure Captain Sisko and the crew of the Defiant on a desperate mission into the Gamma Quadrant, leaving Deep Space Nine vulnerable to a surprise sneak attack!
- Now an elite Klingon task force has seized control of the station, and only Chief O'Brien, Dr. Bashir, and Worf are left to defend Deep Space Nine. But Worf's loyalties are tested when he discovers that the invaders include his oldest friend — and his own brother!
Summary[]
News of a battle in the Gamma Quadrant between Starfleet and the Dominion is causing unease among the civilian inhabitants of Deep Space 9 like Quark, who is forced to advertise his bar to drum up trade. Starfleet Intelligence believes that the Dominion is hiding something near the site of the battle, so Captain Sisko is ordered to take the Defiant to investigate.
Before they can begin the mission, a Federation starship comes through the wormhole, pursued by Klingon birds-of-prey. Another Klingon ship arrives and transports something aboard the Federation ship that detonates and destroys it. Transporting on to the wrecked Federation ship, Commander Worf realises that the Klingons have perfected a weapon that they transport to critical areas on a ship, like the bridge or engineering, and detonate it. The explosion is actually detonated on a Klingon ship and transported to the enemy ship at the point of detonation. The target ship’s shields are interrupted by a Klingon ship running without shields until it is near the target ships own shields, cancelling them out. Worf realises that the Klingons could destroy any Federation ship using these tactic.
Sisko discovers a medical log that reveals that the ship had a Levanian crew. Studying the Levanian log, Chief O'Brien learns that the Levanian ship was targeted as the Levanians discovered a group of Klingons training with the Jem'Hadar in the Gamma Quadrant. Jadzia doesn’t think that the Klingons would ally with the Dominion, but Worf points out that Chancellor Gowron behaved dishonorably in the recent attack on DS9.
Captain Sisko takes the Defiant into the Gamma Quadrant, leaving Worf behind to take command of DS9 in case of a Dominion or Klingon attack. Sisko’s concerns are well founded, as two days after the Defiant leaves the station, a Klingon ship transports a disruptor bomb into Ops that incapacitates Worf and the other crew, except O'Brien. When a Klingon boarding party transports into Ops, O'Brien is able to retreat. Worf wakes up in a holding cell and recognises the Klingon leader, Malach, who he knew as a boy when they were blood brothers at a military school before Worf’s family relocated to Khitomer. Malach claims that he has taken the station to stop the Dominion and promises Worf that his soldiers will not kill any of the station’s inhabitants. Malach asks Worf to join him, and he will allow Starfleet to evacuate the station in exchange for allowing Deep Space 9 to become a Klingon station. Malach also wants Worf to find O'Brien to stop any resistance to the Klingon takeover. Worf agrees. He also sees that his brother Kurn, now Rodek, is one of Malach’s soldiers.
