Description
COLD OPENHealthy Moment:Elmo and Rosita are playing baseball together with Joe Torre watching them. Elmo asks Joe on how he should pitch the ball to Rosita, and he tells Elmo to "walk her." Joe explains that walking is good for the lungs, heart, and muscles and keeps your body healthy, so Elmo and Rosita decide not to play baseball and go for a walk instead.
SCENEBaby Bear welcomes the viewer to Sesame Street and observes that everyone is playing catch today, including himself and Casey. Telly Monster arrives and Baby Bear asks if he wants to play some catch. Telly seems hesitant to do so and confesses that he never learned how to catch a ball. He has Baby Bear throw the ball to him to demonstrate, but Telly just lets the ball fall to the ground.
SCENE cont'd
Baby Bear suggests to Telly that he should have his hands out to catch the ball. Telly does this, but he misses again; Baby Bear tells him that his eyes are closed and that he should keep his eye on the ball. However, with his hands out and his eyes focused on the ball, Telly still has trouble catching it. Baby Bear gets a wee inspiration and takes off.
SCENE cont'd
Telly hears some construction sounds offscreen and Baby Bear comes back with his newly-built invention: the "Keep-your-eye-on-the-ball-and-catch-it-machine." Baby Bear explains how it works and lets the ball roll down a couple of tracks and onto a springy platform that shoots the ball high in the sky.
SCENE cont'd
Telly sees the ball and tries to catch it, but it bounces on his head.
SCENE cont'd
Rosita returns the ball and Baby Bear explains that Telly is trying to learn how to catch. Rosita teaches him the way her tía Rosa taught her: they stand very close together (almost getting nose-to-nose in each other's faces) and she gives the ball to Telly. Telly is excited for his accomplishment, but Baby Bear points out that it's not really a "catch" since they're too close. Rosita explains that they'll now move farther back from each other and she'll pass the ball to him again. She does so, but Telly misses it and Rosita leaves to consult her aunt for advice.
SCENE cont'd
Baby Bear asks Maria for help, and she suggests the method she used with Gabi when she was younger by having Telly catch a bigger ball. She gets a beach ball from Victoria and tosses it to Telly, but he still misses it. Baby Bear asks Victoria if she has a bigger ball, but she says that's the biggest one they have.
SCENE cont'd
A cow (Jennifer Barnhart) arrives and Telly and Baby Bear recognize her from the nursery rhyme "Hey Diddle Diddle" - she's the cow who jumped over the moon. The cow says that Telly could catch her after she jumps over the moon. The cow gets a running start and then jumps really high. When she returns to Earth, Telly manages to catch her, albeit crashing to the ground when doing so. The cow is impressed ("A regular Moo Gehrig!") and with more confidence, Telly tries to catch the beach ball again... and misses! The cow offers Telly a spot on her cow-catching team (the Seattle Moo-riners) as consolation, but he declines.
SCENE cont'd
Baby Bear and Maria encourage Telly not to give up. Baby Bear comments that even a major league player would never give up and gets another idea before running off again. To the sound of fans cheering and baseball music, he returns with Joe Torre, manager of the New YorkYankees. Telly explains to Joe that he has a hard time catching a ball, even when it's tossed to him by Mr. Torre. Joe explains that while it may be difficult for now, if he keeps practicing he'll be able to do it.
SCENE cont'd
As Joe returns to his Yankees baseball game ("Bases loaded, top of the 9th, and Mariano’s gettin’ a little nervous."), Baby Bear asks him if he could return their ball. Joe throws the ball to them... and without thinking about it, Telly catches it! Maria congratulates Telly before heading off, and Telly and Baby Bear keep practicing to get better at catching as well as having fun doing it.
