Mercer Mayer (b. 1934) is a children's book author and illustrator whose first book was published in 1967.

Sesame Street featured his early titles, with Bob reading If I Had... (1969) in Episode 0035. Susan read I Am a Hunter (1968) in Episode 0127 and again (in a different scene) in Episode 0136. Lillian (Vinnette Carroll) read Boy, Was I Mad! (1969) in Episode 0337.

Mayer's earliest books focused on child characters and their vivid imaginations. By the 1970s, he was writing and illustrating the Little Critter and Little Monster books for Western Publishing.
