Well, good night son.
~ Homer Simpson's first words, and first words of the franchise as a whole.

"Good Night" (called "Good Night Simpsons" on the Season 1 DVD) is the first Simpsons short, marking the first televised appearance of the Simpson family. It originally aired on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. The scene with Marge singing "Rock-a-bye baby" to Maggie was also used before the couch gag in the main series episode "Looking for Mr. Goodbart" to celebrate three decades of the Simpsons' televised debut.

Plot[]

A man named Homer Simpson says good night to Bart Simpson, his son. Bart asks Homer about the human mind, and Homer gives a response of "What is mind? No matter? What is matter? Never mind!". Bart thanks his dad, but becomes frightened about the human mind once Homer leaves.

Meanwhile, a woman named Marge Simpson, Homer's wife, says good night to Lisa Simpson, their firstborn daughter and middle child. While Marge is telling her daughter to sleep tight, she tells her to not let the bedbugs bite, causing Lisa to get afraid about bedbugs once Marge leaves.

Later, Marge sings "Rock-a-bye baby" to Maggie Simpson, their newborn and second-born daughter, who is scared of the lyrics and imagines them happening to her for real. Afterwards, Marge says good night and leaves, leaving Maggie frightened.

Marge and Homer are now at their bed ready to go to sleep themselves. Homer says that they are the best parents in the world, which Marge agrees to. Just as they begin to doze off, however, the kids all come running to their parents' bed after being scared from what they were told. Marge is reluctant to let their children sleep in their bedroom for tonight, but decides to let the three in anyway. Once they settle in, Homer tells the kids to go to sleep and says "Good night." Once the lights are turned off, everyone falls asleep except Maggie, who quietly says "Good night" before going to sleep.
