Cutter is a Copy Ability that grants the user the ability to throw blade boomerangs as projectiles, or strike enemies up close with them. Typically, this ability gives the user a yellow cap with the blade embedded in the top, though other appearances of the ability may leave the user largely unchanged until they use it, with the most noteworthy outlier example being in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (where Kirby throws a piece of himself as the boomerang). Using this ability, the user can slice ropes and foliage from a distance by steering his projectiles, or get up close and defeat foes with the devastating Final Cutter attack.

Cutter first appeared in Kirby's Adventure, making it among the oldest Copy Abilities in the entire series. Since then, it has appeared as an ability in 19 subsequent games, making it the most ubiquitous ability in the whole series. Its primary provider is the yellow suit of armor known as Sir Kibble, but many other creatures provide this ability, including Poppy Bros. Jr. with boomerangs, Kapar, the mid-boss Kibble Blade, and the projectiles thrown out by Soul-form bosses that use Shooter Cutter as an attack.

Characteristics[edit]

Kirby using the Cutter ability to slice a nut off a vine in Kirby Star Allies.

Cutter is among the oldest and most ubiquitous Copy Abilities in the Kirby series, first appearing in Kirby's Adventure and reappearing in every subsequent main-series title, along with several spin-offs. In its most basic form, it gives the user the ability to throw bladed boomerang projectiles that travel a short distance in front of them before flying back. While the range forward is rather limited, if the user gets out of the way of their boomerang as it returns, it will fly past them and keep traveling until it leaves the screen or hits something. As such, it is often useful for the user to use this ability while facing away from their target in order to keep a safer distance.

Various subsequent Kirby games give the Cutter ability more utility. There are several stage devices such as ropes and foliage which can be sliced using Cutter, giving the ability utility outside of simply battling foes. Most games also allow the user to steer their boomerang after throwing it, allowing them to reach otherwise difficult spots with their attacks. Games that follow Kirby Super Star's example add a large number of melee attacks to Cutter, allowing the user to fight up close with rapid swings of their cutter blade, finishing with the iconic Final Cutter technique. Main-series titles starting with Kirby: Squeak Squad allow the user to throw more powerful Cutter blades that pass through their targets (usually after charging up the attack). Lastly, Cutter is readily fused with other elements, producing powerful combinations such as those seen in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Kirby Star Allies.

The Cutter Ability's most recognizable provider is the yellow suit of armor called Sir Kibble, who appears in nearly every game that Cutter is featured in. Besides him, there are many more enemies that provide the ability, and it can also be absorbed from the attacks of certain bosses, with the most notable example being the Shooter Cutter projectiles.

Appearance[edit]

Obtaining Cutter in most games gives Kirby a yellow cap with two eyes similar to Kirby's own, with two white wings on their sides. When not attacking, a cutter blade stays on top of the hat; in most games, this blade is simply positioned on the hat, but since Kirby Star Allies, the hat features a small partition on top in which the blade can be placed properly. The colors of the hat have been mostly consistent over the years, although its visor changes from being white, light yellow and yellow depending on the game or media.

Kirby's Adventure[edit]

Kirby attempting to hit Poppy Bros. Sr. with a Cutter boomerang in Kirby's Adventure

Cutter's first appearance is in Kirby's Adventure, making it among the oldest abilities in the series. With this ability, Kirby can throw up to three cutter blades at a time, which return like boomerangs. If Kirby jumps out of the way of his returning cutter, it will fly past him and off the screen, making this ability useful as a long-range attack from behind. Kirby takes on an orange body color for this ability, similar to many others. The cutter blades deal 4 damage.[1]

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

Cutter appears again in Kirby's Dream Land 2. When by himself, Cutter Kirby's attacks function the same as in Kirby's Adventure. However, the attack changes character when paired up with Rick, Kine, or Coo, as follows:

Animal Friend Appearance Description
Coo

Coo throws three feathers ahead which spread out.
Kine

Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which grows as it travels further.
Rick

Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang into the direction he is facing.

Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 2, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Cutter ability. They are marked with a straight line across them.

Kirby Super Star[edit]

Cutter Kirby using the Final Cutter technique on an enemy in Kirby Super Star

Cutter returns in Kirby Super Star, with an expanded moveset that for the first time introduces the Final Cutter technique, along with other close-range attacks. In addition to enemies like Sir Kibble or a boomerang-wielding Poppy Bros. Jr., Kirby can also obtain the Cutter ability through Copy Essences and Copy Essences Deluxe. Kirby Super Star introduced the now-familiar yellow cap with a blade on top for Kirby whenever he has this ability. Kirby can also use up his ability to conjure Sir Kibble as a helper. Moreover, when Copy Kirby uses Analyze Beam on Chef Kawasaki during battle, Cutter is one of the possible copy abilities he can get - the others are Beam, Sword, or Wing.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

When paired up, Rick can toss Kirby as a large cutter boomerang when Kirby has the Cutter ability in Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Cutter appears as an ability in Kirby's Dream Land 3, usable by Kirby and Gooey. When by itself, Cutter's attack functions identically to how it does in Kirby's Adventure, except that it can be aimed upward slightly. However, the attack changes its properties when Kirby or Gooey are paired up with one of the six Animal Friends, as follows:

Animal Friend Appearance Description
ChuChu Kirby or Gooey swing ChuChu around himself like an axe blade, defeating enemies around him. They cannot throw ChuChu, however.
Coo

Coo throws out a single feather that can be angled in three directions.
Kine

Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which destroys Star Blocks without stopping and shrinks as it travels further until it has fully disappeared.
Nago Nago swings Kirby or Gooey upwards very quickly, creating a crescent-shaped blast of energy that flies diagonally into the sky, defeating enemies in its path.
Pitch

Pitch is thrown like a boomerang, harming enemies he touches and returning to Kirby or Gooey. Moving just right can cause Pitch to circle around Kirby or Gooey indefinitely. Kirby or Gooey cannot enter doors until they catch the bird again.
Rick

Rick throws Kirby or Gooey like a boomerang, making them slowly fly through the air and attempt to return to the hamster. If Rick moves just right, it is possible to prevent Kirby or Gooey from returning to his back, causing them to repeatedly orbit their friend instead.

Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 3, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Cutter ability. They are marked with the Cutter icon on them.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

Kirby tossing a piece of himself as the cutter blade in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Cutter returns as a Copy Ability in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. Here, the ability follows the same simple design philosophy as other abilities in the game, giving Kirby only one attack. However, unlike in preceding games, the ability functions a little differently here. Instead of throwing distinct blade boomerangs at his foes, Kirby throws a portion of his body as the blade, splitting himself into two distinct objects. The blade has his face on it and flies at moderate speed forward, then comes back to the rest of his body, which has for the moment been reduced to a thin stub with feet only able to walk around and jump once. Once the two pieces make contact again, Kirby returns to his normal self, which effectively means that Kirby can only throw out one blade at a time, and has limited movement options while the blade is out. Unlike cutter blades in other games, this one will home back in towards the rest of Kirby once it is done flying forward, meaning that Kirby's stub body can guide the blade on its return trip to adjust its trajectory. If the body takes damage while the blade is out, Kirby will immediately snap back to normal as the blade disappears.

Like with the other abilities in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Cutter can be combined with itself or with another ability to create Power Combos. Doubling up on Cutter allows Kirby to throw a larger spike-covered blade, though with the same limitations as before. Combinations with other abilities produce a wide array of powers, including creating a large flaming sword, throwing explosive ninja stars, and even shaping himself into stone sculptures of his Animal Friends.

Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

As it is a remake of Kirby's Adventure, Cutter naturally returns in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, now with the hat first introduced in Kirby Super Star. It retains the moveset from Kirby's Adventure.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror / Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

Cutter Kirby cutting a rope holding up a Sparky in Kirby: Squeak Squad

Cutter returns in both Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad, acting much as it did in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and once again provided by Sir Kibble, Moley's spiked balls (and to some extent in Amazing Mirror's case, Shadow Kirby). Unlike in older games, the cutter blade can be thrown farther by holding B, and the angle of the cutter blade can be curved vertically with the + Control Pad. Notably, the Final Cutter technique appears in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, but it is not performable using Cutter, instead being attached to Smash, Sword, and Master.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, an Ability Scroll can be obtained for Cutter which turns the regular Cutter Boomerang attack into the "Piercing Cutter" (貫通カッター[2]), increasing the size of the cutter blade and allowing it to pass through multiple targets.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

Cutter returns in the Kirby Super Star remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra, largely unchanged from its appearance in the original game. Along with the returning ability-wielding enemies, Perot, a new enemy, also provides the ability when holding a boomerang. Finally, unlike in Kirby Super Star, it is not possible to get Cutter from Chef Kawasaki via Copy.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land[edit]

The Cutter Copy Ability also appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Kirby's Cutter ability is fairly similar in appearance and functionality to how it was in Kirby Super Star, though with the added ability to steer and charge the Cutter blades, much like in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad respectively. The Cutter ability is used often to cut ropes at a distance to collect Energy Spheres.

Cutter is once again provided mainly by Sir Kibble, though other sources include the Jackle enemy and the Kibble Blade mid-boss.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

Cutter returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, largely unchanged from its appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Like in most titles, it is most easily obtained by swallowing Sir Kibble. However, it can also be obtained by swallowing Flowery Woods's spinning flowers. It also features as one of the abilities in Kirby Fighters.

Cutter also appears as two collectible Keychains, one using a sprite from Kirby's Dream Land 2, and another with a sprite from Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]

Cutter is one of the selectable Copy Abilities which can be used in this game. Its moveset is largely unchanged from its appearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Upon clearing Single Player mode with the ability once, a Rare Hat that resembles Sir Kibble's helmet is unlocked.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Cutter returns in Kirby: Planet Robobot, largely unchanged from its appearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, with the exception that Cutter Dash now travels further than before. It can now be used in tandem with the Robobot Armor to form the potent Cutter Mode, which can slice giant wooden beams and chains, and deals massive damage to enemies. The ability can once again be obtained from Sir Kibble and Kibble Blade.

Kirby Battle Royale[edit]

— Knuckle Joe's comment in Kirby Battle Royale

Cutter is one of the first abilities available in Kirby Battle Royale, and is also available along with Sword and Beetle in the demo version. It is distinguished from the other abilities by its blade projectiles being able to bounce off of walls and other barriers.

There are three alternate pieces of Headgear for the Cutter ability. These are the "Sir Kibble Helmet", the "Mohawk", and the "Knight Helmet".

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

By combining Cutter with the Bluster Power Effect, Sir Kibble can throw a boomerang that travels upward to clear away some foliage to solve a puzzle in Kirby Star Allies.

Cutter appears again in Kirby Star Allies, along with Sir Kibble who can utilize its full moveset when recruited as a Friend. In this game, Cutter Kirby has access to all of the same moves as he had in the preceding main-series titles. In addition to its standard attributes, however, Cutter can be enhanced using one of the five Power Effects, adding elemental power to the boomerangs and in some cases, altering their trajectories.

Cutter's hat receives a minor design change in this game, being the addition of a silver partition on top of it, in which its blade can be placed properly.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

Cutter returns in Kirby Fighters 2 as a selectable ability for Kirby, unlocked after attaining a Fighters Rank of 24. Its moveset is largely the same as in previous games, though damage values have been adjusted. Two Rare Hats exist for Cutter Kirby in this game: the first is the Sir Kibble Helmet from Kirby Fighters Deluxe, and the second is the Punk Mohawk, which is similar to the Mohawk headgear in Kirby Battle Royale.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land / Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World[edit]

Kirby throwing a cutter boomerang to catch some items in Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Cutter returns in Kirby and the Forgotten Land and Kirby and the Forgotten Land – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World. Here, Kirby can use the blade to pick up items from afar and return them to him, making it function similarly to the boomerang in The Legend of Zelda series. Unlike in other games in the Kirby series, Cutter's boomerangs are oriented laterally rather than vertically. The Cutter ability also has two evolutions associated with it: it can first be evolved into Chakram Cutter, allowing Kirby to wield a pair of chakrams which deal more damage and tend to curve in a direction when returning, and then into Buzz-Saw Cutter, allowing Kirby to throw large spinning buzz saws that ricochet off walls and drag enemies with them.

This ability is one of four accessible in the game's demo. It automatically becomes Chakram Cutter once the three available stages are complete, but this can be reverted back to the original ability if the player so desires.

Kirby Air Riders[edit]

Magolor with the Cutter ability in Kirby Air Riders. Note the lack of eyes on the hat.

Cutter appears in Kirby Air Riders as an ability obtained from Sir Kibble. It enables the user to throw a cutter boomerang either forward or backward, shortly returning to the sender after thrown. The cutter can also be aimed diagonally to the sides. Like all other Copy Abilities in the game, all riders can use this ability, not just Kirby.

Notably, the Cutter hat in this game lacks its usual eyes, but is otherwise the same in design as past games. Unlike most other abilities in the game, which revert back to their original hat designs from Kirby Super Star, Cutter's hat keeps the part of the hat that holds the boomerang in place that was introduced in Kirby Star Allies, though it is now the same color as the rest of the hat.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Main article: Final Cutter

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Final Cutter is Kirby's up special move in all installments. It's useful for recovering, but causes Kirby to plummet off-stage if he misses the ledge. It also shoots out a projectile if Kirby lands on the ground which can lightly knock back opponents. If opponents are hit during the downswing of the blade, they will be sent flying downward at a fixed velocity.

Kirby has transformed! He is now Cutter Kirby! Cutter Kirby can battle his opponents with the cutter on his cap!
— Meta Knight describing Cutter Kirby in The Fofa Factor

In the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, the Cutter ability makes its first appearance in The Fofa Factor, when Kirby obtains it from the monster Slice n' Splice. The ability functions largely the same in the anime as it does in the games, though its ability to cleave through objects is highly exaggerated.

Unlike many of the other abilities, Cutter has a limited amount of screen time. In The Flower Plot, Kirby uses the blade to quickly fell Lovely in a slice done off-camera. In War of the Woods, Kirby throws a unique move called Cutter Beam to split the Royal Racecar in half, thus temporarily foiling King Dedede and Escargoon.

In the Kirby novel series, the Cutter ability appears in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, where Kirby obtains it from Sir Kibble, makes minor appearances in Kirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!, Kirby Fighters: The Destined Rivals!! and Kirby: Lor Starcutter and a Magician of Falsehood, and one of its Evolved Copy Abilities appear in Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Break Out of the Dreams of the Isolated Isles!. With this Copy Ability, Kirby can use moves such as Cutter Boomerang, Hyper Boomerang and Cleaving Cutter.

In Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, when Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight are on their quest to save the kidnapped Mrs. Parfaitski, they come across a small ravine. The three notice a bridge, and attempt to cross it. Before they can, a sharp blade suddenly flies out, and cuts the rope holding the suspension bridge, causing it to fall into the ravine. Sir Kibble reveals himself, and attempts to attack the group with more of his boomerang-like blades. Kirby drops the Wheel ability he previously had, which releases Wheelie. Kirby then inhales Sir Kibble to get the Cutter ability. Kirby throws the blade on his head at the tallest, thickest tree he could find to cut it down. The tree falls down and reaches the other side of the ravine, allowing the group to use it as a bridge. Wheelie is forced to lead the way. When the group reaches a cave, Wheelie requests that Kirby releases Sir Kibble so they can explain why they had kidnapped Mrs. Parfaitski. Kirby complies, and drops his Cutter ability to release a dazed and angered Sir Kibble.

In Kirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!, the Cutter ability makes a minor appearance as one of the many copy abilities held by the Kirby clones created by the Kirby Printer. It also makes a minor appearance in Kirby Fighters: The Destined Rivals!!, where it's one of the abilities used by Shadow Kirby on his final battle with Kirby. After his defeat, a piece of his cutter blade is used by Bandana Waddle Dee to make a spear out of the staff he had gotten from a Kirby clone during a previous battle. The ability also makes a minor appearance in Kirby: Lor Starcutter and a Magician of Falsehood, where Kirby uses it to battle against Landia.

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land: Break Out of the Dreams of the Isolated Isles!, while the base Cutter ability does not make a proper appearance, its Evolved Copy Ability Buzz-Saw Cutter appears at the end of the novel. It is given to Kirby by Weapons-Shop Waddle Dee shortly before the battle with Chaos Elfilis, and Kirby uses said ability to battle it.
