(*) In practice, the setup is equivalent to shining a laser at a beam splitter with transmittivity equal to the real quantum efficiency of the photodiode and detecting one output of the beam splitter with an ideal photodiode with an assumed quantum efficiency of 100%. The second input to the beam splitter is empty and introduces the vacuum quantum state, which we exploit for the generation of random numbers.The output of the photodetector is digitally sampled and subsequently all other noise contributions, such as laser noise and electronic noise, are removed by data processing.
