WRITER-DIRECTOR Ari Aster's twisted family portrait performs a cinematic striptease, holding our gaze (even when we want to look away) by peeling away the layers of darkness and deceit that condemn one griefstricken family led by miniaturist artist Annie Graham (Toni Collette, pictured) to a grim fate.

It was Violet Chachki who shone in the striptease element of the show, the Drag Race queen of burlesque stuns with her clothes, her body and her knowledge of performance.

Hopefully, because WB wants to rekindle interest in the art form of burlesque: teasingly witty, sardonically sexy striptease. Unlike the sleazy pole-dancing form, burlesque usually features characters with narratives and the audience doesn't approach the dancers.
