A crystal drawing of chalcanthite in Mason and Berry (1968) shows six pinacoids and the same general form as the models.

[Campo Morado is known today as a major volcanogenic massive sulfide district which has produced chalcanthite stalactites up to 15 cm in diameter and over 1.5 meters long!] From there we continued onward to a cluster of houses called Corral de Piedra, where we found an interesting chalky formation containing amethyst crystals of very good color.

Passing a stand of shockingly colored man-made chalcanthite might have been enough to make you rethink mineral collecting.

Several blue and orange-colored sulfates have not been positively identified but probably include romerite, voltaite, metavoltine and chalcanthite. The alunogen and melanterite are probably the minerals responsible for the acidic properties of the matrix, which destroys the paper used to wrap the specimens.

As it is at so many localities, chalcanthite is a post-mining product at Butte.

Borax and chalcanthite, in beautiful, gemmy crystals freshly collected, eventually alter to powder and cannot be preserved by normal at-home techniques.

Antlerite, a rare secondary mineral at Rudabanya, occurs in small fractures in the limonite ores as dull, pale green, powdery coatings and thin layers consisting of randomly intergrown, acicular crystals of microscopic size associated with malachite, covellite and chalcanthite (Szakall et a)., 1997).

Chalcanthite is found with other secondary copper minerals in the First Sovietskiy mine.

Blue efflorescences of post-mining chalcanthite can be found on tetrahedrite ore piles at Cerro Chico.
