We described a selective interlaminar toughening method using GO dispersed in a thermoplastic carrier (PVP) and introduced in the midplane of the composite to enhance the Mode I fracture toughness of carbon fiber-epoxy composites.

A coordinate system (x, y, z) is introduced at the one corner of the midplane of the nanoplate, whereas the x axis is taken along the length of the nanoplate, the y axis in the width direction and the z axis is taken along the depth (thickness) direction.

The SFD configuration in this work is a symmetric damper about its midplane with open ends (i.e., no seal).
