(fûr′tl-ĭ-zā′shən)1. The process by which a female reproductive cell becomes capable of developing into a complete organism by union with a male reproductive cell. In many animals, such as mammals, fertilization occurs inside the body of the female. In fish, eggs are fertilized in the water. In plants, eggs are fertilized inside the parent plant. 2. The process of making soil more productive of plant growth, as by the addition of organic material or fertilizer.
